The Avett Brothers’ Emotionalism is the most contrived record I’ve heard this year (2007). It’s also one that, like my kitchen table, I’ve returned to, compulsively and without expectation, for comfort and familiarity. My stupid little bromide, maybe. And what the band– two brothers and a friend from Concord, North Carolina– lacks in subtlety, they make up for with embarrassing persistence: Song after song, stumbling through country, bluegrass, orchestral pop, and early Beatles-style pop-rock, they never waste a chance to harmonize or wail, to loose one beat-down sentiment after another, to back-pat or console.

Cold War Kids
Cold War Kids make songs about human experience in orchards and hotel rooms, laundromats and churches, sea ports and school halls. Using songs of Dylan, Billie Holiday, and the Velvet Underground as a road map, they strive to manipulate, structure, and style their music with honesty.

Isles and Glaciers
Back in 2008, fans of post-hardcore got a little treat when the formation of Isles & Glaciers was announced, notably because the band would be fronted by the vocal efforts of both Craig Owens and Johnny Craig. These guys, alongside some key members of Pierce the Veil and others rounding out the mix, absolutely had the talent to produce a remarkable effort, and thus the hype started to build. After much anticipation and delay, their debut EP, The Hearts Of Lonely People, has finally been released. Did this post-hardcore supergroup live up to its potential?
The answer is no…
